On the move

Dansverkstæðið hlaut Erasmus+ styrk fyrir verkefnið ON THE MOVE 2023-24.

  • Dansens hus, Noregur

  • Arts Management Helsinki, Finnland

  • Urbanistinio Šokio Teatras, Litháen

  • Minaoku Seki, Þýskaland

  • ASSITEJ Liechtenstein, Liechtenstein

Participants' statements

Yelena Arakelow:

In December 2023, I had the opportunity to conduct a Contemporary Dance workshop at “Pūga” dance festival organised by Urbanistinio Šokio Teatras “Low Air” in Vilnius, Lithuania.

I had a great experience teaching adult learners with diverse backgrounds and skills in dance. One important practical realization was the need for teaching in larger spaces when working with more than 20 participants and less experienced dancers.

Beyond the teaching, the mobility allowed me to connect with the festival organisers, learn about audience development and community engagement. I return from this mobility inspired, encouraged, and excited about the potential of future collaborations.

Magdalena Twork and Linde Hanna Rongen from Dance Enthusiasts:

The first mobility of the On The Move project was taken by the Improv for Dance Enthusiast Collective to TicTac Art Centre .

About Improv for Dance Enthusiasts Erasmus+ Adult Education experience

Improv for Dance Enthusiasts is organising weekly dance classes in improvisation, contact improvisation and partnering, as well as dance jams with live music by local musicians. They stand for inclusivity and transparency towards the participants and create an open learning environment for both beginners and experienced dance enthusiasts to share the passion for dance. The collective formed in 2020 and is run by four foreign artists living in Iceland: Janosch Bela Kratz, Linde Hanna Rongen, Magdalena Tworek and Yelena Arakelow. To prepare for an upcoming community performance the collective travelled in January 2023 to Bruxelles to take an intensive 4 week course in Improvisation On Stage led by David Zambrano at TicTac Art Centre. Following you can read a few reflections on their Erasmus+ mobility experience.

Magdalena:

I enjoyed observing how little tasks that we were given through the passing weeks were reappearing in the space through all of us participating. Taking a course so (relatively) long gave an opportunity for the teachings to sink in and for the trust to grow. With that shared group experience we could hold the energy in the improvised sharings for as long as 40 minutes. And that felt great.

Linde:

The course gave me the opportunity to experience the act of instant performing at a detailed level, coming to a point that even questions and answers were physically performed. To be in the state of constant performance reminded me of the fragility of performing and what it might exclude. It made me realise that I observe the act of performing separated from the self, hypothetically a version of one self on stage is an elevated one. As I perceived it through the teaching of David I can reflect on the idea that improvised performing can be done with all that life has given to me previously, is giving at the moment, and will give in the future.

Dancing with one another on a daily basis over the course of four weeks is a fertile ground to start working from in the future. Looking forward to ‘gathering’ all information from the course, transmuting the experiences and exploring them within the community of Improv for Dance Enthusiasts.

We are very grateful to have been able to travel, learn new methods and dance in the same space on a daily basis. Now in 2023 we are, on a weekly basis, sharing our improvisation knowledge and newly acquired teaching methods with participants of our workshops.
